Peter Borten embarked on his formal exploration of natural medicine as a botany major at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he studied medicinal plants and sustainable agriculture.  As an undergraduate he began to focus on his health and spiritual development;  he started to practice Kundalini yoga, and he received training to the master level in Reiki (from Gurunam Kaur Khalsa and Siribalwant Singh Khalsa, L.Ac.).

After completing his bachelor’s degree, he attended the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, a four-academic-year postgraduate school renowned for its strong herbal curriculum and distinguished Chinese faculty.  Licensed Acupuncturists receive diagnostic training in both Chinese and Western medical sciences, and learn several treatment modalities, including acupuncture, nutrition, herbal medicine, massage, and energy work.

While at OCOM, Peter studied Qigong - the practice of cultivating, balancing, and manipulating Qi (life energy) - with Master Hui Xian Chen.  He also completed training in advanced forms of Qigong and healing with Qi to become certified as a Qigong instructor.Peter additionally pursued instruction in several forms of massage, including workshops in Thai massage with Paul Greenbaum, D.C., L.Ac., and three years studying Shiatsu under the tutelage of Lindy Ferrigno, L.M.T., a 25-year practitioner and former chair of the Oregon Board of Massage.

Following his graduation from OCOM, Peter completed a two-year post-post-graduate program with Khosrow Khalighi, M.Ac. (UK) in San Francisco, to specialize in Classical Five Element Acupuncture - an uncommon style of acupuncture used specifically for treating the mind and spirit (recognized in this system to be the root of most sickness).

Peter is now a student in OCOM's Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program -- the first doctoral program in this field in the nation.  This program is for seasoned practitioners wishing to further develop their knowledge and skills by working with experts from China and other leaders in biomedical and Oriental medical fields.
